Yesterday I felt like quitting.
The list was long, budgets weren’t adding up, my cycle had started, our home was filled with the gleeful energy of my children x too many jelly beans, and for my sensitive sponge of a heart, it was just too much.
I felt pressure, overwhelm, and urgency building in my core.
So I took myself to the river and started walking.
I walked until I got to a spot where the earth sloped down gently towards the water and I stood at the edge of the elements and watched the birds fly out and toward the horizon.
The sun had just begun to dip below the hills behind me and, while my side of the river was in the shadows, the trees on the other side were lit up in a lush green display against the warm tone of the evening sky.
The river water ebbed, this song played through my headphones, and just when the whole thing had me close to tears out of nowhere a Great Blue Herron glided gracefully into view and landed twenty feet from my little earth perch.
Hand on my chest, tears in my eyes, and an unapologetically cheesy grin on my face, I was swept up in the magic of this planet we’re lucky enough to call home.
This life is but a blink of an eye in the endless expanse of the universe.
Countless lives have been lived before this one and countless ones are yet to unfold.
Sometimes when it feels so impossibly impossible to figure anything out and the weight of it all feels like too much to handle and you just want to give up and run away and hide, sometimes (most times?) the very best thing we can do is stop trying to figure it out and let yourself quite, even if only for the night.
Then make your way to the water and let it remind you that even when you appear to be all alone in the shadowy darkness, somewhere out there across the ebb and the flow there is sunshine on the trees and pink in the sky and beauty and grace.
May we rebel against false urgency.
May we have the courage to pause when we feel the waves of urgency of overwhelm.
May we let ourselves move toward the water and feel our energy shift, even if only a little.
May we find the answers we seek in the stillness of the present moment.
With love and gratitude,
Raina
